monday again...july 14

5AM- up. After feeding Peanut the cat first- and she seems to always come first- i fed me with a snack of a nectarine, string cheese, and pb (in honor of ptc). My first day with a real snack, not the 1/2 zb prior to a wod. WOD of 400m lunges, 5 rope climbs, 75 ghd sit-ups and 75 ghd hypers. Nice little diddy. Snack worked great. CA: (coach advice): account for the snack and drop a block today.

7:30- 3B- 3/4 c. cottage cheese, 2/3c. oats with 1/3c. applesauce, and 1 TBS. slivered almonds.
All good until 9:30, when I am hungry. So, I 'caved' in for 1/2 a zb. There goes my make up session.

11:30- ready for lunch- trying this again-3B: 3 oz. chicken, 1B salad, 1/2 apple, 1/2 c. blueberries.

Evening update:
OK, folks-I have been out of the zone today. Feel like I have been playing 'catch-up' the entire day because what I think happened is the 3B breakfast maybe was not enough, and I have basically been hungry all day...after lunch I made it to 1:15 and had 1/2 zb.

3:00- snack of 1/2 apple, 1/2 tsp. pb, and string cheese.

Supp @ 6:15 because I am, of course, hungry.
4B- 4 oz. chicken, 1.5c. green beans, 1B salad, 3/4 c. blackberries mixed with 1c. strawberries w/ cinnamon. Truly a delight. Oh, and then, 12 almonds. NOW, I feel great!

I re-assessed my block requirements on Dr. Spears' website, and got 16B. I thought I was at 15B, but this time I did change my activity level one notch, I think to 'elite athlete'....? Anyone care to comment here? If this is so, then I guess this could explain why I have been hungry?

Total- 14B

  1. I count the 1/2 ZB in the early morning as an added snack for my day on the days that I get up at 4am and usually go to sleep between 10 and 10:30 (which is pretty much M-F). I figure it is okay to have an additional snack those days because they are such long days and sometimes it isn't even added because I eat late and then don't have a night time snack. I think I am definately more of a 4 blocker than a three blocker and if I really can't stomach all of the food of a 4 block I try to at least eat 3.5 blocks. I find that three just doesn't take me mentally and physically through to the next snack or meal. I do not count the fat in the egg as by zone you don't count the fat in your protein as part of your "added" fat. Also, I believe according to discuss w/Jason we would need more fat becasue of our activity level anyways... but I will ask him about it when I ask him what "arachidonic acid" is and why your book has a star by eggs as containing this acid?!

  2. hey girl! i'm brand spankin new to this zone thing, but i've been reading a lot about it and have found some helpful info on the crossfit message boards. www.board.crossfit.com. i read a few posts about people doubling the fat in their blocks to increase their peformance, mental clarity, and other fuel needs...although this was after they were already at their desired body fat and not looking to trim down anymore. you're already super lean, so maybe your body just needs more fat rather than more total blocks? i didn't really read too in-depth since i'm not even close to that right now, but just wanted to throw it out there for you in case it's something that might help you out!

  4. Hi Sarah. Thanks so much for letting me borrow the book. I am copying some recipes and the block lists and will give it back to you am Wed. I was also reading a little about archidonic acid and according to Dr. Sears it is a "bad fat" found in high fat meats, egg yolks etc. He says we need some of this acid in our bodies and he doesn't say we should eliminate egg yolks but watch the amount of this acid we consume. We eat lean meats and the eggs are cage free, no anitbiotics, grain fed so I don't know if that makes a difference as far as concentration of the acid in egg yolks. Anyways, I am planning on e-mailing Rob Wolf about a couple things going on with me to get his input and will ask him what he thinks about this acid and limiting our yolks etc. Will let you know what he says.
